Why Choose a Workers’ Compensation Specialist in NC?

Not just any attorney that handles workers’ compensation cases can call themselves a specialist. To be considered a specialist, the attorney must be certified by the North Carolina State Bar. This board certification should reassure any client that his or her attorney is well-versed in the handling of workers’ compensation cases. In addition, once the certification is obtained, the attorney must obtain recertification every five years.

The certification process requires four things:

(1) substantial involvement in the practice of workers’ compensation law (an average of at least 500 hours per year devoted to handling workers’ compensation cases);

(2) an appropriate number hours of continuing legal education each year in the area of workers’ compensation;

(3) the attorney’s peers (other lawyers, deputy commissioners, commissioners, and judges) must attest to his competence and qualification in the practice of workers’ compensation; and

(4) the attorney must pass a written examination administered by the North Carolina State Bar specifically on the topic workers’ compensation.
